Jason endured crush injuries. If compressed for more than one hour muscle tissue begins to release protein and other things into the blood stream. After the release of the crushing pressure the release into the bloodstream of muscle breakdown products - notably myoglobin, potassium, and phosphorus places strain on the kidneys.
Jason's doctors recommended that he begin dialysis Thursday morning. This is to relieve his kidneys of the full responsibility of removing the proteins and potassium in his blood.
Jason began dialysis around 11 am. The doctors will monitor his blood levels and then dialysis as necessary.
This may require a two week hospital stay.
